WELCOME to the 5th TEPHINET & 3rd AFENET Regional Scientific Conference.

The Kenya Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, the Ministry of Medical Services, the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), and the Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET) are co-sponsoring the 5th TEPHINET & 3rd AFENET Regional Scientific Conference, to be held in Mombasa, Kenya, from 31 August to 4 September 2009.

Trainees and graduates of field-based training programs in applied epidemiology (FETP), laboratory management and epidemiology (FELTP), public health practice and related programs are invited to submit abstracts (in English only) on investigations or projects undertaken during training and completed within the past 2 years. Abstracts should describe outbreak investigations, implementation and evaluation of public health programs or surveillance activities, or other areas in applied epidemiology or public health practice. Abstracts and presentations should emphasize how the results of the investigation or an analysis were used to direct public health actions and also describe or estimate the public health impact.

The theme of the conference is “One Health,” and the following scientific tracks will address the theme:

  • Burden of disease (Diarrhoeal diseases, HIV, TB, Malaria)
  • Zoonosis
  • Non-communicable diseases
  • Cutting edge prevention (e.g., Vaccine development)
  • Roles of laboratory in public health investigations and interventions
  • Migration and the spread of communicable disease
  • Impact of climate change on health: Emerging and re-emerging diseases

We encourage delegates to submit abstracts to one of the themes. If no theme is selected, the abstract review committee will assign an appropriate track to the abstract.

Submitted abstracts should be original; they should not represent work already published in peer-reviewed journals or previously presented at an international conference.
